Helical Piles in Pennsylvania

Explore the Technology Behind the Product

Screw piles and helical anchors distinguish themselves from most other foundation and anchoring systems because of one key benefit: they can be loaded immediately after installation. This advantage eliminates the waiting time required for materials like concrete or grout to cure and harden.

Understanding Helical Piles

Helical piles, also known as helical piers, helical anchors, or posts, are screw-in piles employed for building deep foundation systems and ground anchoring systems. A helical pile features a central shaft (circular or square) and one or more helix plates. These helix plates are press-formed with a specific pitch to mimic a screw and are welded to the shaft. Helical piles are available in various sizes and configurations to address different loading and logistical requirements. Factors such as design load, soil conditions, soil corrosiveness, and the structure's service life influence the size and configuration of a helical pile.

How Do They work?

As the helical pile is driven below grade into the most stable soil conditions, the load transfers from the shaft to the helix plate(s). A high-torque/low-speed hydraulic drive motor, which can be attached to an array of equipment like excavators and skid steers, "screws" the helical pile into the ground. Helical piles remain unaffected by high water tables or caving soil conditions.

Advantages of Helical Piles

Helical piles are cost effective when compared to other systems
High loading capacities. A single pile can support up to 50 tons
Capacity is determined during installation
Eliminate concrete curing time and formwork
No mess. No spoil produced during installation
Can be installed when unstable and caving/sloughing soil conditions are present
Reduces amount of truck trips to and from a job site
Well understood by local governments and is compliant with building code regulations
Can be installed in high water table situations
Small installation equipment allows helical piles to be installed in areas with limited access
Can be installed all year around in all weather conditions
Resistant to frost heave
Fast installation compared to other systems. A foundation of 20 piles can be installed in 1 day
Quiet and vibration free installation
Galvanization used to combat corrosive soil condition to extend a structure’s service life
Minimizes disturbance in environmentally sensitive areas
